Prescribing Medications

Medications are prescribed from within a patient's own record, on the Medications tab, not from the clinic-wide Medications dashboard.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the patient's record → Medications tab.
  2. Add a new medication: drug name, dose, frequency, start date, and (if applicable) an end date or refill date.
  3. Save — this requires the prescribe_medications permission specifically (having view_medications alone is not enough).
  4. Edit or discontinue existing medications from the same tab as needed.
  5. Print a formal prescription document if the patient needs a physical copy (see Printing Prescriptions).

Common issues & fixes

the account has view_medications but not prescribe_medications; ask an admin to grant it.
if the Pharmacy module is enabled, drug names may be validated against the pharmacy catalog; ask pharmacy staff to add it if missing.
check the end date/refill date fields are set correctly, since the dashboard's "expiring soon"/"overdue refill" sections rely on them.
