Lab Module

Lab Module Overview

The Lab module is a full in-house laboratory information system (LIS) — separate from the "upload an external report" feature on a patient's chart — covering the complete workflow from test ordering through sample collection, processing, result entry, verification, and reporting, plus quality control and instrument management.

Role-based dashboard personas

The Lab Dashboard adapts based on your permissions:

  • Administrator (lab_settings) — full oversight.
  • Pathologist (lab_verify_results) — focused on verifying entered results.
  • Lab Technician (lab_enter_results) — focused on processing samples and entering results.

The core workflow (order → report)

  1. Order — a test is ordered (from OPD, IPD, or directly in the Lab module).
  2. Sample collection (Phlebotomy) — a physical sample is drawn and labeled.
  3. Receiving — the sample is received and logged into the lab, with rejection handling for compromised specimens.
  4. Result Entry — values are entered (manually or via instrument interface).
  5. Verification — a pathologist/authorized reviewer verifies results before they're finalized.
  6. Reporting — the final report is generated and made available to the ordering clinician/patient.

Supporting features: Test Catalog & Panels, Quality Control, Instruments, External Referrals, and a Turnaround Time (TAT) dashboard for monitoring how quickly each stage completes.

Common issues & fixes

expected; it's persona-based on your specific lab permissions.
some lab actions (ordering, sample collection, results viewing) are also accessible directly from within IPD without leaving the ward; check whether you're looking for the IPD-side or full Lab-module version.
